The finale of the seventh symphony makes much use of a theme with all twelve notes, though it is tonal. Eduard Tubin (1905-1982) came to maturity just as Estonia managed to free itself from the shackles of Russian domination in 1918. This freedom was relatively short-lived and in 1944 Tubin fled to Sweden where he spent the rest of his life, though without ever really gaining the recognition in musical Sweden that he deserved. To generalize, Jarvi directs taut, tightly-knit and rythmically propulsive performances; BIS provides its usual transparent sound, though by now just slightly dated, but still capturing the acoustic settings of his live performances Eduard Tubin was one of the greatest symphonists of the 20th century, and of all time. Although he remains lesser known, Tubin's symphonies stand with the biggest and finest.

It seems to me that Eduard Tubin’s symphonies constitute a significant contribution to twentieth century symphonic literature. Though their music is vastly different I’d compare his achievement to that of Edmund Rubbra for both exhibit a consistent sense of purpose and of integrity in their respective symphonic outputs.
Symphony No. 4 inaugurates the second phase of Tubin’s symphonic authorship, showing a marked contrast with No. 3 in its quietness and in its invocation of a landscape untroubled by war. Tubin’s “Lirica” bears the same relation to his storm-tossed No. 3 as Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony does to his Fourth.
